Now that you’ve had an opportunity to see some examples of my work, please see below the steps for commissioning a portrait.
The photograph
I work from detailed, high quality photographs. There are two ways to source a suitable photograph.
The first – my preferred method – is for me to meet you and your pet, and take the photographs myself. This means that I can form an idea of his or her personality and convey that in the photos and eventual drawing. I can then send you a small selection of the best photos, for you to choose the one that you feel best represents your pet. This is included in the price of the drawing if you live (or can travel to) within a ten mile radius of Clifton, Bristol. If you are further away, I am very happy to come and take photos, for a small charge in respect of my time and travel expenses.
The second option is favoured by clients who are either some distance away or who cannot or do not wish to arrange a photoshoot. If you would prefer this option, you will need to send me several photographs of your pet. These photographs must be high quality and clear, preferably taken on a good camera rather than a phone.
Some guidelines for taking your own photographs of your pet – natural light is preferable. I usually draw just the head and shoulders, but I can provide a full body portrait if you prefer. Make sure that the eyes are visible and clear, and that the image is not blurred. Take the photo from the animal’s eye-level, and not from above. I understand that higher quality images will not always be possible – in these cases I would recommend that I come and take photos myself, or that you choose a smaller size of drawing. Please be aware that I will not be able to work from a poor quality photo to produce a detailed and accurate drawing. How long will it take?
Once we have agreed on the photograph that I will use, I will be ready to make a start. A proposed finish date will be discussed with you for each individual portrait, depending on my waiting list of commissions, but if you would like a portrait completed by a specific date or occasion, please do contact me to see if this can be accommodated.
Placing an order
Once we have agreed on a photograph, I will ask for a 50% deposit. This is non-refundable, except in the unlikely case that I need to cancel the commission. Upon completion of the drawing I will send you a photograph – if you are happy with the piece, I will request payment of the remainder of the cost. Then, I will post the piece.
Pricing
I offer single portraits on either A3 or A4 paper. When mounted, A3 paper will give you a drawing of approximately A4 size; A4 paper will give an A5 image. I would usually recommend A3 paper, as this allows for the greatest level of detail in your pet’s portrait. A4 is more suitable for drawings made from less high quality photographs. A2 is an ideal option for double portraits; of two pets together.
A mount is included in the price of the commission.
Postage and packaging costs are extra, and will be discussed on an individual basis. Alternatively, you may prefer to collect.
A3 – 30x40cm – £400
A2 – 50x70cm – £750
(A2 is for two subjects)
A4 – 24x30cm – £300
